How to check your brand in ChatGPT for free

You can do this by hand in about ten minutes, and it is worth doing once before you trust any tool, this one included. Here is the whole method.

1

Open a signed-out or temporary chat

A logged-in session is shaped by everything you have asked before, including your own brand. Use a temporary chat, a private window, or an account that has never discussed your company — otherwise you are measuring your own history.

2

Write the questions a buyer would type, not your brand name

Asking "what do you think of Acme?" tells you what the model knows once prompted. The question that matters is the one asked before anyone has heard of you: a category, a constraint, and often a place — "best project management tool for a five-person design studio", "reliable HVAC repair in Rotterdam". Write five to ten of them.

3

Ask each question in its own fresh chat

Asking a second question in the same thread contaminates it: the model has already committed to an answer and will stay consistent with it. One question, one chat.

4

Record four things per answer, not one

Whether your brand was named at all; whether it was the first recommendation or offered as an alternative further down; which competitors were named instead; and the tone. Being listed seventh as an alternative is a different problem from not being listed.

5

Ask what the answer was based on

Follow up with "which sources support that?" and write down the domains. Those are the pages the engine trusts for your category — usually review sites, roundups and forums rather than anyone's homepage. They are where a fix has to land.

6

Repeat in Claude, Gemini and Perplexity

They disagree more than people expect. A brand named by every engine has a different problem from one named by a single engine, and you cannot tell which you are without asking all of them.

7

Do it again next month, with the same questions

A single run is an anecdote. The same questions asked a month apart is a measurement, and it is the only way to know whether anything you changed worked.

What ten minutes by hand cannot tell you

  • One answer is one sample. Models are not deterministic, and the same question can name you on Tuesday and not on Wednesday.
  • Comparing months only works if every answer was recorded the same way — which is tedious enough by hand that almost nobody gets to the second month.
  • Four engines times ten questions is forty fresh chats, before you have written anything down.

That is the gap the checker above fills: the same questions put to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity in one run, scored the same way every time, so next month's answers can be compared with this month's. It is free, needs no signup, and takes about 60 seconds.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check my brand in ChatGPT for free?

Open a signed-out or temporary chat, write five to ten questions the way a buyer would ask them — a category and a constraint, never your brand name — and ask each one in its own fresh chat. For every answer, record whether your brand was named, whether it came first or as an alternative, which competitors were named instead, and the tone. Then ask which sources support the answer and note the domains. Repeat in Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, because they disagree. That takes about ten minutes and costs nothing. The checker on this page does the same thing in one run and scores it the same way each month, which is the part that is tedious by hand.

Is there a free tool to check if my brand shows up in ChatGPT?

Yes, and you also do not strictly need one: asking ChatGPT five to ten buyer-intent questions in a signed-out chat and writing down what it names is a valid free check. A tool earns its place on repeatability — the same questions, the same four engines, scored the same way, so this month can be compared with last month instead of being one more anecdote. This page does that free, without a signup.

What is a free ChatGPT visibility checker?

A ChatGPT visibility checker asks ChatGPT the kind of question your customers ask — a category and a constraint, not your brand name — and reports whether it recommends you, who it recommends instead, and in what tone. The useful ones run the same questions across several engines, because ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity frequently name different brands for the same question.

Is the AI visibility check really free?

Yes. You get 3 free checks with no signup required. Results are delivered in about 60 seconds via real-time streaming from all 4 AI engines.

How do I check if ChatGPT recommends my brand?

Enter your brand name and industry on this page. GeoBuddy will ask ChatGPT (and 3 other AI engines) relevant questions about your industry and show you exactly what they say — including whether your brand is mentioned, the sentiment, and how you rank against competitors.

Why isn't my brand showing up in ChatGPT?

Most brands are invisible in AI responses because they've optimized for Google, not for AI. ChatGPT relies on training data, authority signals, and third-party mentions — not traditional SEO. Use this checker to see where you stand, then follow GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) strategies to improve.

Is this the same as an AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) checker?

Yes. AEO and GEO both describe checking and improving how AI engines answer questions about your brand — Gartner's first Market Guide for the category (March 2026) uses the term 'Answer Engine Optimization.' This checker measures the same thing regardless of which term you use: whether ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity name your brand, and who they name instead.

AI Brand Visibility: The New Competitive Edge

Across 2,556 brands we have measured since 2026-02-16, 60% scored zero — not one of the four engines named them for any of the questions their own customers would ask. The average score was 14.6%. Measured 2026-09-20; how we measure.

GeoBuddy asks ChatGPT (OpenAI), Claude (Anthropic), Gemini (Google) and Perplexity the questions your customers ask, and records who each one names. The free check gives you a visibility score in about a minute; paid plans re-ask the same questions on a schedule, so a change month to month means something.

Key Definitions

AI Brand Visibility
The frequency and prominence with which AI assistants (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity) mention and recommend a brand in response to user queries. Measured as a percentage across monitored prompts.
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)
The practice of optimizing brand presence in AI-generated responses. Unlike SEO which targets search engine algorithms, GEO focuses on building authority signals that large language models use to formulate recommendations. See the full GEO guide for how it works and how to improve it.
Share of Voice (AI)
The percentage of AI recommendations in your industry that mention your brand compared to competitors. A key metric for understanding competitive positioning in AI search.
